Clinical aberrometry and lens pathology

Purpose:

To examine the influence of lens pathology (different types of cataract and lens dislocation) on higher-order aberrations (HOAs) in adult patients using wavefront Hartmann-Shack analysis.

Setting:

Svyatoslav Fyodorov " Eye Microsurgery Clinic" , St.-Petersburg Branch, 21 Yaroslav Gashek Str., St.-Petersburg, 192283, Russia.

Methods:

We used WASCA and CRS-Master aberrometry (" Carl Zeiss Meditec" ) and Pentacam (" OCULUS" ) system. Wavefront Hartmann-Shack analysis were performed in 28 eyes with a nuclear mild cataract, 26 eyes with a cortical one and in 19 with initial lens subluxation. HAOs were calculated up to 4th - 6th orders using Zernike polinomia systems. The relationship between lens opacification, lens position (subluxation) and clinical aberrometry were investigated.

Results:

Spherical-like and vertical coma increased in eyes with mild cataract. Vertical coma was the very important sign in cortical cataract and in the initial lens dislocation especially. Spherical aberrations increased in nuclear mild cataract. But the level of the vertical coma was more pronounced in lens dislocation. Accuracy of clinical aberrometry strongly depends on the cataract levels.

Conclusions:

Mild cataract (nuclear and cortical) and also transparent lens dislocation (initial subluxation) influenced ocular aberrations (total and HOAs - spherical-like and coma-like). Vertical coma and spherical aberrations are the specific features /(Zernike polinomia Z (3,1) and Z (4, 0)/ in the aberrometric investigations of lens pathology. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
