Purpose:
To evaluate the biometry before and after refractive laser surgery using the Lenstar LS 900® optical biometer because of increasing volume of cataract surgical procedures after corneal refractive surgery.
Setting:
Eye Clinic - VIKOM, Zilina, Slovakia
Methods:
The retrospective study evaluated two groups of patients who undergone WFO. Excimer laser Allegretto Wave 200Hz® was used for photoablation in Group A and Eye-Q BLUE LINE 400Hz® in Group B. LASEK procedure was done for correction of refractive errors. All our LASEK patients received a preoperative evaluation consisting of UCVA, BCVA, manifest and cycloplegic refraction, keratometry, tonometry, pachymetry, topography / oculyzer screening, wavefront analysis, pupil size, ocular dominance, tear film examination, slit lamp examinantion, dilated fundus examination. For biometry and IOL power calculations we used Lenstar LS 900® optical biometer (before and 1 year after procedure).
Results:
All surgeries were performed without complications, by one surgeon. Group A contains 50 eyes and Group B contains 50 eyes. A: Mean age: 28.44 ±7.0y. Ų UCVA before LASEK: 0.12 ±0.1, in 1year after operation: 1.16 ±0.15. Mean operated refractive sphere error was: -3.42 ±1.68 and cylinder was: -0.88 ±1.37. Ų CCT preop. was: 551.5um and postop.: 490.88um. B: Mean age: 29.92 ±6.2y. Ų UCVA before LASEK: 0.19 ±0.1, in 1year after operation: 1.19 ±0.11. Mean operated refractive sphere error was: -3.93 ±2.1 and cylinder was: -0.72 ±0.72. Ų CCT preop. was: 549um and postop.: 475.84um. There were no statistically significant differences between the axial length (AL) before and 1 year after WFO. For IOL calculation in 1 year after WFO we compare ultrasound biometry with optical biometry using Shammas No-History formula - postLasik.
Conclusions:
As part of the normal aging process, patients who are undergoing keratorefractive procedures may ultimately develop cataracts and may need cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation. One priority during the pre/post refractive surgery is careful documentations included biometry. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
