Purpose:
To investigate the relationship between histopathologic features of pterygium tissue and recurrences.

Methods:
Between 2007 and 2010 years, 101 patient who were diagnosed with pterygium were retrospectively evaluated in this study. Eleven (% 10.9) patients were recurrent pterygium. ?n all cases, after the excision of pterygium, l?mbo-conjunctival autograft was transplanted. Patients were followed 9.7 months (4-14 months) after surgery. Pterygium tissues were investigated with hematoxylin eosin, Gomori's reticulin, Masson's Trichrome and Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) technique in pathology clinic . Cases were divided into three groups according to histopathologic features as inflammation density, degree of vascularization and hyaline changes We were examined relationship of recurrence between the histopatholoical groups.
Results:
The study included 50 women (49.5%), 51 male (50.5%). Ninety patients were primary (89.1%) and 11 of cases were (10.9%) recurrent pterygium. There was no histopathological difference between cases without recurrence and recurrence cases after surgery in primary group (p > 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference for histopathological features between the two groups that without recurrence and recurrence patients after surgery. There was no statistically significant difference for histopathological features between the primary and recurrent pterygium groups. There was a positive correlation between inflammation and vascularization histopathological features of pterygium tissue (p= 0.022).
Conclusions:
There was no relationship between the histopathological features of pterygium tissues and recurrences . FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
