Purpose:
Cataract surgery is the most frequently performed surgery in ophthalmology. We investigated the influence of different factors in the final surgical outcome.
Setting:
HÅpital Simone Veil, Eaubonne, France
Methods:
Prospective consecutive study of 450 eyes of patients that underwent cataract surgery. The studied parameters included: age, sex, weight, height, medical history, origine, type of anesthesia, patient's anxiety during surgery, keratometry, axial length, time of ultrasounds, peroperative complications, time of surgery.
Results:
Age averaged 75.6 years old (44, 100), mean preoperative spherical equivalent was -0.04 (-10, 7,5), mean keratometry was 43.87 (39.5, 49) mean axial length was 23.25 mm (20.91, 29.78), mean peroperative time was 17.2 minutes (5, 50). A heavy medical history, anxiety, small axial length, higher peroperative ultrasounds and extended surgical time were important factors responsible for peroperative complications.
Conclusions:
The surgeon needs to take into account all these factors in order to inform the patient about the higher post-operative complication risk and in order to best choose the type of anesthesia to be used. Cataract surgery needs to be personalised. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
