Purpose:
To investigate the correlation of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in different parts of peripapillary area with visual field defects.
Setting:
Ministry of Health Ulucanlar Eye Education and Research Hospital
Methods:
A total of 76 eyes of 38 patients with glaucoma evaluated with both Heidelberg Optic Cohorence Tomography and SITA Standart 30-2 Humprey visual field test. The RNFL values of at the superotemporal (TS), superonasal (NS), nasal (N), inferonasal (NI), inferotemporal (TI) and temporal (T) quadrants and visual field test scores were analysed; and their correlation was evaluated by Pearson Correlation coefficients test.
Results:
The mean age was 52.47±13.83 (22-72) years. 19 (%50) of the patients were female and 19 (%50) of them were male. Correlation between mean deviation (MD) and RNFL thickness in all quadrants were statistically significant with correlation coefficiency of TS (r=0.60, p=0.00), NS (r=0.44, p=0.00), N (r=0.47, p=0.00), NI (r=0.41 p=0.00), TI (r=0.60 p=0.00) and T (r=0.49 p=0.00) quadrants. Correlation between pattern standart deviation (PSD) and RNFL thickness were also significant in all quadrants; TS (r=-0.47, p=0.00), NS (r=-0.33, p=0.00), N (r=-0.31, p=0.00), NI (r=-0.23, p=0.49), TI (r=-0.33, p=0.00) and T (r=-0.29, p=0.12). A significant correlation was observed between MD and PSD (r=-0.80 p=0.00).
Conclusions:
Patients with glaucoma RNFL thickness was correlated with visual field test parameters MD and PSD in all quadrants. Both physical and sensory tests evaluations are important in glaucoma patientsÂ’ follow-up. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
