" Primary" LASIK in " aged" patients for myopia correction

Purpose:

To estimate results (incl. safety and predictability) of " primary" LASIK surgery in " aged" patients for myopia correction.

Setting:

St.-Petersburg brunch of Svyatoslav Fyodorov " Eye Microsurgery" clinic, St.-Petersburg, 192283

Methods:

We examined 45 " primary" LASIK surgery of " aged" patients (90 eye) for myopia correction. The age of our patients ranged from 40 till 57 years (46,6+/-5,7 years in average). We used TSA-algorithm MEL-80 (" Carl Zeiss Meditec" ) for the corneal laser ablation only and mechanical microkeratoms LSK " Evolution" -2 and -3 (" Moria" ) for flap creation. As a rule optical zone diameter was reduced till 6,00 – 6,25 mm.

Results:

Pre-op sphere-equivalent (SE) of our patients was -5,05+/-3,86 D in average. Pre-op UCVA was 0,05+/-0,08. Post-op UCVA was 0,80+/-0,18 in the third year after our LASIK surgery. Almost all patients could read without " plus" glasses during 3 years after LASIK surgery. All patients had no glaucoma and no mild cataract, but some of them had gentle phakosclerosis before and after LASIK surgery.

Conclusions:

" Primary" LASIK surgery in " aged" patients for myopia correction is a safe and very predictable procedure if the patients had no glaucoma and no cataract before LASIK. There was corneal epithelial detachment in 8 patients (16 eyes) only (17,8%). Anyway surgeon can choose between LASIK and phacoemulsification in this group. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
