Impact of preoperative cornea condition on visual functional outcomes after Descemet's stripping endothelial keratoplasty

Purpose:

The aim of the study is to show how preoperative cornea condition determines visual outcomes after Descemet's stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK).

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Collegium Medicum Nicolaus Copernicus University, Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Methods:

: 22 pseudophakic eyes with isolated corneal pathologies (bullous keratopathy, Fuchs dystrophy, posterior polymorphous dystrophy) that underwent primary DSEK were enrolled in the study. Several preoperative parameters (visual acuity, time and reason of vision deterioration, central corneal thickness (CCT), corneal optical density measured with Pentacam) were evaluated and compared to postoperative and 3- 6- and 12-month follow-up results.

Results:

Preoperative factors that correlated with worse outcomes after DSEK were time from the onset of corneal disease established by vision deterioration of more than 4 years (p<0,05), initial CDVA less than 2.0 LogMAR (p<0,01) and clinically significant corneal edema defined as CCT of more than 886 microns (p<0,005). Contrary, eyes with moderate and lasting less than 2 years corneal edema and preoperative CDVA of 1.0 LogMAR, achieved mean CDVA of 0.06 Log MAR.

Conclusions:

Preoperative cornea condition is highly correlated with postopereative visual results after Descemet's stripping endothelial keratoplasty. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
