Purpose:
To assess the ability of hydrophilic IOLs to serve as drug delivery system for dexamethasone, diclofenac, and timolol using an in vitro model
Setting:
Kaplan Medical Center
Methods:
Thirty hydrophilic acrylic IOLs were divided into 3 groups. The IOLs were soaked for 15 minutes in dexamethasone ophthalmic solution (group A), diclofenac ophthalmc solution (Group B), and Timolol ophthalmic solution (Group C). the IOLs were than rinsed and soaked for 12 hours in viales contatining 5 ccof BSS. The vials were than sampled and the samples immediatly placed on dry ice. The samples were sent for high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis.
Results:
The avrage total amount of the drugs that were found were: 62.2 ng dexamethasone, 1.81 mcg diclofenac, and 17.13 mcg timolol
Conclusions:
Hydrophilic acrylic IOL can serve as a drug delivery system for timolol FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: ... research is funded, fully or partially, by a company producing, developing or supplying the product or procedure presented, ... travel has been funded, fully or partially, by a company producing, developing or supplying the product or procedure presented
