Purpose:
To analyse the outcomes of phacoemulsification (Phaco) vs small incision cataract surgery (SICS) performed by trainee surgeons.
Setting:
Tertiary care ophthalmic center
Methods:
250 patients undergoing bilateral sequential cataract extraction were randomized to either Phaco or SICS and followed till 6 months
Results:
All preoperative factors were comparable. The postoperative BCVA was 0.98±0.1 and 0.99± 0.2 (p>0.05, t test), astigmatism was -1.02 ±0.6 and -0.9 ±0.7, specular count was 1585.3±302 and 1622.1±288 for phaco and SICS respectively (p>0.05 for all comparisons, t test).Complication rates were comparable.
Conclusions:
Phacoemulsifcation and SICS seem to have comparable results in trainee surgeons at 6 months followup. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
