Purpose:
Scleral autograft is an effective treatment modality for repairing full thickness corneal defects. Studies have shown that scleral patch amalgamates with the cornea over time and can become transparent. However corneal growth under the opaque scleral graft cannot be visualized. This prospective study was done to assess the effectiveness of anterior segment OCT for analyzing corneal healing under scleral autograft.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology,
Leicester Royal Infirmary.
Leicester U.K
Methods:
Two patients with perforating corneal injuries underwent scleral autograft to seal large full thickness corneal defects. Both patients were followed monthly over eight months with serial high resolution OCT to assess corneal healing under the scleral graft.
Results:
Scleral autoplasty effectively sealed the corneal perforation in both patients. Serial high resolution OCT demonstrated growth of corneal stroma below the scleral graft. Whereas the first patient has shown near total healing of the corneal stroma the second patient still shows a large stromal defect.
Conclusions:
Anterior segment OCT allows objective assessment of corneal wound healing following scleral autoplasty for repair of corneal perforation. An important property of the anterior segment OCT is the ability to image the cornea behind the opaque sclera. We feel that this property can be further utilized for assessing corneal wound healing patterns under the scleral graft. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
