Corneal high order aberrations for low myopia: laser epithelial keratomileusis vs photorefractive keratectomy

Purpose:

To compare the corneal high order aberrations (HOA) for low myopia after treatment with Laser epithelial keratomileusis (LASEK) and Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).

Setting:

Hospital Quirón Bizkaia, Spain

Methods:

Retrospective study, forty eyes of 22 patients with low myopia, 20 eyes treated with LASEK (-2.24±0.84 D) and 20 eyes treated with PRK (-2.19±1.06 D). All surgery was done with Visx Star S4 IR excimer laser. The corneal HOA for 6 mm were evaluated 6 months after the surgery using the topography previously performed with corneal topographer Orbscan (Technolas Perfect Vision, Munich, Germany). The analysis of the aberrations was calculated with the CTView® (Sarver & Associates).

Results:

After surgery, the corneal spherical aberration Z(4,0) had increased with both techniques: 0.40±0.15 µm (p 0.0006) eyes treated with LASEK and 0.36±0.11 µm (p <0.0001) in the PRK group. There were no significant differences in corneal HOA between the patients treated with LASEK versus the patients treated with PRK: Z(3,-3) (p 0.54); Z(3,-1) (p 0.79); Z(3,1) (p 0.53); Z(3,3) (p 0.33) and Z(4,0) (p 0.41).

Conclusions:

An increase in corneal HOA was observed in treatment of myopia of the same level. However, there was no difference between LASEK and PRK patients. Therefore, the quality of vision analised with HOA could not determine which of these two techniques contributed to a better visual improvement. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
