Dynamic rotational eye tracking and iris recognition-assisted LASIK for management of high astigmatism leading to amblyopia in cases with pseudo-keratoconus secondary to obstetrical forceps injury (birth trauma)

Abstract Details



Purpose:

o analyze the safety profile, visual and refractive results of excimer laser photoablation for management of high astigmatism leading to amblyopia in cases with pseudokeratoconus secondary to birth trauma related Descemet’s scars.

Setting:

Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital and Eye Research Center

Methods:

In this interventional case series, five cases (four patients) with high astigmatism in cases with birth trauma underwent femtosecond laser flap creation and iris recognition assisted excimer laser photoablation. Uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UDVA and CDVA respectively), refraction, corneal topography and spectral domain anterior segment optical coherence tomography were done preoperatively and at follow-ups.

Results:

Preoperative parameters were: Refractive Error 0.15±1.5D Spherical(S) ,-4.2 ±2.4D(Cyl) ,spherical equivalent(SEQ) –1.9±2.8D and logMAR-CDVA 0.36±0.24D . At last follow-up (8.8±3.8 months), the parameters were : 0.1±0.1DS, -0.4±0.2DCyl ,- 0.3±0.2 D SEQ , logMAR 16±0.2. No loss of CDVA was seen.The mean variation between 1 month and last follow-up was -0.05±0.1D in the sphere, 0.2±0.2D in cylinder, 4.0±4.1° in axis of the cylinder, and 0.05±0.1D in spherical equivalent. There was no evidence of ectasia or abnormal topography in any of the follow-ups.

Conclusions:

Excimer laser photoablation for management of high astigmatism leading secondary to birth trauma scars seems to a safe and effective procedure. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
