Purpose:
To describe and evaluate the modified phacoemulsification technique of eccentric crater and capsulorhexis in cataracts with co-exisiting partial corneal opacification
Setting:
Tertiary eye care referal centre
Methods:
Modified phacoemulsification technique of eccentric crater and eccentric capsulorhexis was undertaken in 48 eyes with cataract and co-existing partial corneal opacity in this prospective study. The incision site was varied according the site of corneal opacity ( superior in 15 eyes and temporal in 33 eyes ) .
Nylon hooks were used to dilate the pupil in 8 eyes with adherent leucoma. An eccentric capsulorhexis was performed using foreceps and direct chop was done in 32 eyes and an eccentric crater was made in 16 eyes. Bimanual irrigation aspiration was done and single piece acrylic intraocular lens implantation done .
Results:
The mean size of the corneal opacity was 4.2 + 1.4 mm ; The corneal opacities were central in 18 eyes and paracentral in 30 eyes. The BCVA was less than 6/60 in all eyes and post operatively it improved to better than 6/12 in 29 eyes, 6/18-6/36 in 19 eyes. One eye was converted to extracapsular cataract extraction and one eye was left aphakic. There were no intraoperative complications.
Conclusions:
Modified phacoemulsification technique of eccentric crater and capsulorhexis is feasible and can be successfully performed in cataracts with co-exisiting partial corneal opacification . FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
