Treatment of nonhealing neurotrophic corneal ulcer with topical cyclosporine A 2%

Abstract Details

Purpose:

This study was evaluate the efficacy of topical cyclosporine A 2% with refractory neurotrophic corneal ulcers.

Setting:

Haydarpasa Numune Trainnig and Research Hospital

Methods:

Seventeen eyes of 17 patients (11 males and 6 females) with neurotrophic corneal ulcers refractory to conventional treatment and amniotic membrane transplantation were included. The neurotrophic state was developed following keratoplasty ( 3 eyes), herpetic (9 eyes), post-chemical burn (3 eyes), and unknown (2 eyes). The patients with neurotrophic keraitis were treated with topical cyclosporine A 2% eyedrops 4 times a day for 12 weeks. The outcome parameters evaluated were epithelialization time, size and depth of the ulcer, optical coherence pachymetry, improvement in best corrected visual acuity, patient's subjective symptoms, and relapse of the disease in the follow-up period. anterior segment photography were performed before and after the treatment.

Results:

The mean age in our study was 58(43-73)years. All patients showed an improvement in the best-corrected visual acuity. The epithelial defect healed completely in all eyes, with a mean healing time of 4.1 weeks(range 2-6 weeks). The healed corneal ulcer was accompanied by reduced inflammation. During the follow-up period of 6 months, recurrence had been observed in 2 patients

Conclusions:

Topical cyclosporine A 2% effective treatment modalitiy for refractory neurotrophic corneal ulcers. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
