6 millimeter Keraring intrastromal rings for correction keratoconus: one year results

Purpose:

Evaluate changes in visual acuity and refraction in patients with 6-milimeter intrastromal corneal rings (Keraring) one year after the surgery.

Fundación oftalmológica del mediterrįneo, valencia, spain

Methods:

In a prospective non comparative interventional case series, outcomes in 136 eyes, with corneal (keratoconus, mpellucid marginal degeneration, ectasia post-lasik) were analyzed 12 months after the implantation of the Keraring instrastromal ring using femtosecond technology (IntraLase 60 KHz). They comprised uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), refraction, slit lamp examination, and corneal topography.

Results:

The mean UCVA and BCVA after Keraring implantation were 0.41±0.29 and 0.76±0.23, respectively. The BCVA after instrastromal corneal ring implantation was statistically significantly better than the BCVA before surgery (P<0.05). 83,90% of patients had BCVA? 0,5 and 55,17% ? 0,8. There was a reduction in the cylinder and the sphere after the surgery. There was a reduction in the keratometry after the surgery but statistical differences were observed only in the steepest K not in flat K. The patients do not complain about halos. No complications were observed during the surgery and after the surgery.

Conclusions:

The Keraring intrastromal 6 milimeter corneal ring were a safe, and effective, procedure for the correction of corneal ectasia withs less visual undesired effects than the 5 milimeter diameter. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
