Intraocular lens power calculation in hyperopia

Purpose:

To compare the accuracy of different intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation formulas using partial coherence interferometry in eyes below 22 mm in axial length (AL).

Setting:

47 eyes of 35 patients with AL below 22 mm have been analyzed following uneventful phacoemulsification and IOL implantation at the Department of Ophthalmology of the Military Hospital between March and December in 2011.

Methods:

AL and keratometric power were measured by IOLMaster (Carl Zeiss Meditec), and implanted IOL power was calculated using SRK/T, Hoffer Q, Holladay 1 and Haigis formulas. Predicted and achieved postoperative refractions were analyzed for each formula on the postoperative 6th week.

Results:

The mean AL was 21.49±0.48 mm, the implanted IOL power ranged from 24 to 31 D. The lowest mean prediction error arose using Hoffer Q (-0.01±0.80 D ), followed by Haigis (0.03±1.00 D), Holladay 1 (0.19±0.73 D) and SRK/T (0.3±0.73 D) formulas. Mean absolute prediction errors (MAE) were within ±1.0 D in 80% of the patients both with Hoffer Q and SRK/T, 83% with Holladay 1 and 75% with Haigis formulas.

Conclusions:

Lens calculation in hyperopic eyes requires more attention. In our study the usage of Hoffer Q and Haigis formulas resulted in lower prediction error. The MAE was less than 0.75 D with all four formulas. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
