Purpose:
To determine the incidence of acute endophthalmitis after cataract surgery in Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, a tertiary academic eye center in Jakarta, Indonesia, from January 2007-December 2009 and to evaluate the association of suspected risk factors
Setting:
Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta, Indonesia
Methods:
A retrospective case-controlled study was conducted to evaluate the association between age, gender, diabetes mellitus, incision type, IOL material, posterior capsular rupture, surgeonsÂ’ experience and type of service to the rate of acute endophthalmitis after cataract surgery. The incidence was determined through a retrospective cohort study
Results:
The incidence of acute endophthalmitis after cataract surgery in CM hospital for 2007, 2008 and 2009 was 0,29%, 0,39% and 0,6% respectively. There was no significant association found between the suspected risk factors to the rate of endophthalmitis. Younger age was found to have a tendency toward higher rate of endophthalmitis
Conclusions:
The overall 3-year incidence of acute endophthalmitis after cataract surgery in CM hospital was 0,43 %. Age, gender, diabetes mellitus, incision type, IOL material, posterior capsular rupture, surgeonsÂ’ experience and type of service was not found as risk factors for endophthalmitis FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
