Collagen cross-linking for progressive keratoconus in Japanese eyes

Purpose:

To report the short term results of nine Japanese keratoconic eyes treated with corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL).

Setting:

Tokyo Dental College Ichikawa General Hospital, Chiba, Japan

Methods:

A standard protocol (3mW/cm2 for 30 minutes) was used to perform CXL in 9 eyes with progressive keratoconus. Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), best corrected distance visual acuity (BCVA), manifest spherical equivalent (SE), average K value, endothelial cell density (ECD), central corneal thickness (CCT) and complications were evaluated at baseline and at 1, 3, 6, 12months. Changes were analyzed with the paired t test.

Results:

At six months, the UDVA and BCVA showed no changes in 4 eyes (44.4%), improved in 4 eyes (44.4%) and decreased in 1 eye (11.1%). The mean SE decreased by 1.3 diopters (P=0.48) and the mean average K value decreased by 0.82 diopters (P=0.81). One eye showed increase of the average K value at 6 months. The mean ECD showed no significant changes (P=0.56) and the mean CCT did not show a significant reduction (P=0.32). No intraoperative complications were observed. One eye with a thinner cornea showed deep stromal opacity 2 months after CXL.

Conclusions:

The results of this study did not show significant visual improvement after uncomplicated CXL procedures in short term but suggest stabilization in progressive keratoconus. Further studies are needed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of CXL in Japanese or Asian keratoconic eyes. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
