Purpose:
To evaluate a case of Epi-on CXL where the patient demonstrated a rapid response to treatment.
Setting:
Center for Excellence in Eye Care, Miami, Fl
Methods:
A 9 year old male with bilateral keratoconus underwent Epi-on CXL with topical anesthetic. The patient was out of soft contact lenses 1 month prior to treatment. Outcome measures included UCVA, BSVA and refractive changes. Pentacam and topography were measured at pre-op and post-op visits. Corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistance factor (CRF) were measured using Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA).
Results:
Pre-op UCVA improved 6 logmar lines in each eye - from 20/200 to 20/50 OD and from 20/100 to 20/25 OS on post-op day 1. Post-op day 2 BSCVA OD showed an improvement from 20/50 to 20/40 and OS improved from 20/50 to 20/25. Pre-Op CH and CRF OD increased from 7.5 to 7.9 and 6.2 to 8.1, respectively, at the latest visit. Pre-Op CH and CRF OS increased from 7.5 to 8.9 and 5.9 to 8.4, respectively, at the latest visit.
Conclusions:
Epithelial-on CXL can result in rapid visual improvement as well as improvement in corneal shape and corneal strength.
