Comparison of five bandage contact lenses after photorefractive keratectomy

Purpose:

To compare the efficacy of 5 types of bandage contact lenses (BCLs) after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).

Setting:

Double-masked clinical trial/Noor Eye Hospital/Tehran/Iran

Methods:

In this study, 174 patients (77.6% female, mean age 27.9±5.9 years) received PRK in both eyes. Each patient was randomized to receive one of the 5 available BCLs (AcuVue , Night & Day , Optix , Actifresh , T lens) in 1 eye and another type in the fellow eye. The epithelial defect size and subjective level of discomfort were measured at surgery and daily after surgery until both eyes had reepithelialized and the lenses were removed.

Results:

The mean epithelial defect size at surgery was similar with all BCLs (P=0.9). On postoperative days 1-4, the change in mean defect size was not significantly different among lenses. Lens removal was most rapid with the Optix and Actifresh lenses (3.7±0.7 and 3.6±0.7 days, respectively) than Night & Day lens which had the longest healing time (4.0±0.8 days; p<0.01). Mean pain level and foreign body sensation were significantly highest in the eyes with Actifresh lens on the first day (p<0.001) and the T lens on the second day (p<0.01). After the second day, both the pain and foreign body sensation decreased in all lenses and there was no significant difference among them. T lens caused significantly more inflammation of the cornea on all postoperative days (p<0.001).

Conclusions:

The Optix and Actifresh lenses resulted in significantly faster lens removal, while T lens caused most patient discomfort in patients during the first days after PRK. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
