Investigation of retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and its correlation with intraocular pressure in glaucoma patients

Purpose:

To evaluate the relationship retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFL) with intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement of the same day in glaucoma patients.

Setting:

Ministry of Health Ulucanlar Eye Education and Research Hospital, Ankara

Methods:

The data of 76 eyes of glaucoma patients were examined. RNFL thickness of each superotemporal (TS), superonasal (NS), nasal (N), inferonasal (NI), inferotemporal (TI) and temporal (T) quadrant measured by Heidelberg Optic Cohorence Tomography and their correlation with IOP measured in the same day were analysed with Pearson correlation test.

Results:

The mean IOP was 17.93±3.7 (12-27) mm Hg with medication in the same day which RNFL was analysed. A statistically significant correlation with IOP and TI quadrant (r=-0.29, p=0.01) was observed. But the correlation with IOP and other quadrants were not significant which were TS (r=0.03, p=0.98), NS (r= -0.21, p=0.07), N (r= -0.15, p=0.19), NI (r= -0.16, p=0.15) and T quadrant (r= -0.06, p=0.63).

Conclusions:

In glaucoma patients with medically controlled IOP, IOP measurements and RNFL changes of TI quadrant was correlated. The higher the IOP the more RNFL changes was observed in TI quadrant. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
