Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the benefits of Laser Refractive Cataract Surgery for anterior capsulotomy and phaco-fragmentation designed to make cataract surgery predictable and consistent irrespective of surgeon experience.

Setting:

Outpatient clinic settings in Makati City, the Philippines and Lima, Peru.

Methods:

The LensAR Laser System was used to treat 48 consecutive patients attending for cataract surgery who had given informed consent to be in the study. The full LensAR procedure was completed including docking, imaging, automatic image processing and generation and application of patient-specific treatments. In addition, European and US-based surgeons were offered the opportunity to use the system in a clinic in Lima, Peru founded by Dr. Frank Bucci.

Results:

Ease of opening the laser-cut capsulotomy was rated highly with >90% given the highest rating with the majority of capsule buttons free floating and detached from the remaining capsule prior to surgery. Centration and circularity of the capsulotomy were excellent. Phaco-fragmentation allowed nuclear disassembly to occur easily with minimal use of ultrasound energy. Compared to conventional phacoemulsification, ultrasound energy was reduced by between 50 & 100%, depending on cataract grade.

Conclusions:

Laser capsulotomy and phaco-fragmentation assist the surgeon in performing predictable and reliable surgery that in turn assist the achievement of predictability of post-surgical outcomes.
