Purpose:
To evaluate surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) and flattening effect following phacoemulsification with 3.2, 2.2 and 1.8-mm superior clear corneal incisions.
Setting:
Rothschild Foundation. Paris; France
Methods:
Prospective non randomized series of 192 eyes (61 eyes with a 3.2-mm incision, 68 eyes with a 2.2-mm incision and 63 eyes with a 1.8-mm incision). Vector analysis was used to calculate SIA and flattening effect 1 month postoperatively.
Results:
Superior 3.2-mm corneal incisions showed statistically significantly greater SIA compared to 2.2 and 1.8-mm incisions (0.99±0.07 v 0.63±0.05 v 0.51±0.04). The comparison of 2.2 v 1.8-mm incisions was also statistically significant i terms of SIA, but the two incisions were similar in terms flattening effect (0.43±0.06 v 0.33±0.04 [p: 0.23]).
Conclusions:
Standard 3.2-mm corneal incisions produced more SIA and flattening effect compared to 2.2 and 1.8-mm incisions. The comparison of 2.2 and 1.8-mm incisions showed a significant difference for the SIA only. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
