Purpose:
To investigate the ocular complications in patients with AIDS/HIV infection in Korea.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Medical Research Institute, Pusan National University Hospital, Pusan, Korea
Methods:
We reviewed the medical records of 281 patients diagnosed as AIDS/HIV infection in Pusan National University Hospital during recent 5 years retrospectively and analyzed the symptoms related to eyes to investigate the ocular complications in AIDS patients.
Results:
The number of AIDS patients who have visited the department of ophthalmology is 64(128 eyes), of which 39 patients(60.9%) show normal findings in both eyes and 25(39.1%) have one or more ocular diseases in the retinas, optic nerves and external eyes such as HIV-related retinopathy in 7(5.5%), CMV retinitis in 6(4.7%), tuberculous phlebitis in 2(1.6%), rhegmatous retinal detachment in 2(1.6%), ocular syphilis in 2(1.6%), central retinal vein obstruction in 1(0.8%), acute retinal necrosis in 1(0.8%), optic neuritis in 1(0.8%) and panuveitis in 1 eye(0.8%).
External eye diseases are noted in 8 patients and 13 eyes, of which dry eye syndrome in 4(3.1%), allergic conjunctivitis in 3(2.3%), senile cataract which need surgical treatment in 3(2.3%), episcleritis in 2(1.6%), complicated cataract in 1 eye(0.8%).
Conclusions:
The patients with AIDS/HIV infection should receive an ophthalmic examination regularly for early detection and appropriate treatment of ocular complications. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
