Setting:
The Academician S.N. Fyodorov FSBI IRTC " Eye Microsurgery" Tambov branch, Tambov, Russia.
Methods:
Epi-LASIK, transepithelial photorefractive keratoplasty (PRK). We observed 650 eyes, operated on with epi-LASIK 150, with PRK - 500. Male patients 37%, female 63%, aged from 18 to 38 years old. Mild degree of myopia 21%, average degree 27%, high degree 52%. In cases when epi-LASIK and PRK are possible (acceptable corneal thickness) in postoperative period in both cases subepithelial fibroplasia may occur (as practice shows).
Results:
After epi-LASIK the late fibroplasia was revealed in 3.5% of all cases in patients with myopia of about 10-11 D. After PRK early and late fibroplasia occured in 4.0% of all cases in patients with the same degree of myopia. In patients with mild and average myopia and very thin corneas after both epi-LASIK and PRK no fibroplasia was revealed.
Conclusions:
Therefore, there are no objective advantages in one of the operations mentioned above. And every surgeon makes the last choice, taking into consideration his preferences, qualification and a patient“s desire. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
