Purpose:
To compare the visual outcome, contrast sensitivity and wavefront analysis of patients that underwent cataract surgery and implantation of Tecnis® ZMB00 multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) with those who received the ReSTOR® SND1T toric multifocal lens.
Setting:
Hospital de Egas Moniz Centro Hospitalar de Lisboa Ocidental
Methods:
Prospective clinical trial of 10 eyes that received the multifocal IOL and 12 eyes that received the multifocal toric IOL after phacoemulsification.
Over a 3-month follow-up period, the main outcome measures were spherical equivalent, distance visual acuity, near visual acuity and higher-order aberrations measured with a dynamic retinoscopy aberrometer.
Optical quality was also accessed by analyzing the in vivo modulation transfer function (MTF) and point-spread function (expressed as Strehl ratio).
Results:
Both uncorrected near, distance visual acuities and aberrometry analysis were similar with both groups of intraocular lenses.
Also, there was no statistically significant difference between contrast sensitivities in the 2 types of IOLs.
Conclusions:
Both studied intraocular lenses promoted excellent near and distance postoperative visual acuity.
The Toric multifocal IOL presented no statistically significant difference from the spherical multifocal IOL in terms of higher-order aberrations or optical quality.
Further studies with more patients are needed to confirm these results. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
