Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the ability of a novel open capsule device (PID) to reduce PCO rates using different IOLs materials.

Setting:

Harlan Biotech Israel

Methods:

Thirty four New Zealand rabbit eyes were divided into 6 similar groups after crystalline lens evacuation. Group A: implantation of hydrophilic acrylic IOLs alone, Group B: implantation of hydrophobic acrylic IOLs alone, Group C: implantation of hydrophobic acrylic open capsule devices and hydrophilic acrylic IOLs, Group D: implantation of hydrophobic acrylic open capsule devices and hydrophobic acrylic IOLs, Group E: implantation of hydrophilic acrylic open capsule devices and hydrophilic acrylic IOLs, Group F: implantation of hydrophilic acrylic open capsule devices and hydrophobic acrylic IOLs. The rabbit were followed weekly for 6 weeks. The rabbits were scarified; the eyes enucleated and were evaluated using the Miyake-Apple view and weresent for histological evaluation.

Results:

The PID maintains an open capsule. Clinical PCO rates at 6 weeks were 49% lower in the hydrophobic PID groups and 65% lower in the hydrophilic PID groups in comparison with the control groups (group A: 2.9+/-0.9, group B: 2.8+/-1.1, group C: 1.5+/-0.4, group D: 1.4+/-0.4; group E: 1.0+/-0.5, group F: 1.0+/-0.9). Miyake-Apple view demonstrated a decrease of the PCO scoring of 73% at the hydrophilic PID groups and 80% at the hydrophobic PID groups in comparison with the control groups. Soemmering’s rings were significantly reduced in all PID groups in comparison with the control groups.

Conclusions:

We found encouraging PCO prevention results for both PIDs and IOL materials. The PID not only reduce PCO rate but also Soemmering’s ring formation.
