Purpose:
To determine if the actual post-operative IOL position (Actual Lens Position or ALP) can be better predicted using pre-operative High Resolution Ultrasound (UBM) Images of the crystalline lens and surrounding landmarks. The significance is that in any given cataract surgery patient, the variability of the final post-op IOL position is a large contributor to the error in the refractive outcome. Therefore this study has the potential to improve the refractive accuracy of cataract surgery. The difference between Effective Lens Position (ELP) and ALP will also be discussed.

Methods:
This study analyzes data of between 25 and 50 cataract surgery eyes. Preoperative vertical and horizontal UBM images of the crystalline lens and surrounding landmarks were obtained along with the standard keratometry, IOL Master biometry and immersion biometry metrics. UBM images of actual IOL position (ALP) were then obtained at least 1 month postoperatively and compared to the corresponding preoperative images in each patient to determine if the final IOL position can be better predicted from the preoperative UBM images.
Results:
Preliminary comparison of pre- and post-op UBM images in each patient seems to indicate that the actual postoperative lens position can be better predicted using the pre-op UBM images. Ongoing analysis is pending to determine the significance of these findings.
