Purpose:
To evaluate efficacy and adequacy of topical anesthesia in phacoemulsification surgery in a random sample of Saudi patients.
Setting:
Opthalmic Department - King Abdulaziz Medical City. Dammam. KSA
Methods:
A continuous cohort of 88 Saudi patients were recruited regardless of their age, density of cataract, dilated pupil size, or the presence of ocular co-morbidity.
4 doses of Amethocaine HCL 1% were instilled over 10 minutes prior to surgery.
Degree of pain was assessed using 10- point visual analogue pain scale immediately after surgery (0 = no pain, 10 = severe pain). Degree of intra-operative iris manipulation was recoded on 0 to 3 scale (0 = No manipulation, 3 = excessive manipulation). PatientsÂ’ cooperation was assessed on 10 point scale (0 = most uncooperative. 10= extremely cooperative).
Results:
Mean level of pain score was 2.3 ± 1.2 Mean level of iris manipulation was 0.5 ± 0.85. Mean level patientsÂ’ cooperation was 6 ± 2.3
There was significant correlation between recorded intraoperative pain and degree of iris manipulation P=0.011 significant correlation between patient pain score and level of co-operation P= 0.024.Tthere was no correlation between patient score pain and intraop pupil size P= 0.75 , duration of surgery 0.66 and density of cataract 0.99. there was no recorded intraoperative complication.
Conclusions:
phacoemulsification surgery under topical anesthesia is a safe and well tolerated by Saudi patients with various degree of cataract. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
