Corneal biomechanical properties in eyes with descemetic and predescemetic deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty

Purpose:

To compare the biomechanical properties of the cornea in eyes with descemetic deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (dDALK) and predescemetic deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (pdDALK) using the Reichert Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA).

Setting:

Haydarpasa Numune Education and Research Hospital, Ophthalmology Clinic, Istanbul, Turkey

Methods:

Sixty eyes of 60 keratoconus patients who underwent DALK were included in this retrospective comparative study. Forty four eyes were with dDALK (group 1), and 16 eyes were with pdDALK (group 2). Corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistance factor (CRF) were measured at least 6 months after suture removal with ORA. The results were compared between the study groups.

Results:

Mean patient age was 26.7±5.1 years in group 1 and 25.5±5.8 years in group 2 (p=0.530) and the mean follow-up period was 21.8±1.4 months in group 1 and 21.02±2.2 months in group 2 (p=0.142) after corneal transplantation. CH was measured 10.38±2.6 mmHg in group 1 and 10.62±1.2 in group 2 (p=0.236). CRF was 10.11±2.6 and 10.36±2.1 mmHg, respectively (p=0.124). No significant difference was found between group 1 and group 2 in terms of CH and CRF.
