Purpose:
to compare the astigmatic correcting effect of opposite clear corneal incisions (OCCI) on steep axis with 2.2 mm and 3.0 mm incisions in cataract patients undergoing phacoemulsification.
Setting:
Kayseri Training and Research Hospital Turkey
Methods:
This randomized prospective clinical trial included 42 cataract patients undergoing phacoemulsification with topographic astigmatism of more than 1.50 diopters(D). 2.2 and 3.0 mm OCCI were made in the steep axis as superior cataract incison. The main outcome measures were refraction, keratometry and topography that were evaluted before and 3 months after the surgery.
Results:
The mean preoperative and postoperative topographic astigmatism was 1.82±0.82 D and 1.80±0.76 D respectively in 2.2 mm incision group (p>0.05) and1.88±0.78 D and 0.82±0.48 D (p<0.05), respectively in 3.0 mm incision group.
Conclusions:
OCCI on steep axis is a useful technique for correcting preexisting mild and moderate corneal astigmatism in 3.0 mm cataract incisions. This effect wasnt observed in 2.2 mm incision group FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
