A comparison of three methods for correction of corneal astigmatism during phaco surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

to compare the safety and efficacy of three methods of correcting a pre-existing corneal astigmatism during phacoemulsification surgery: limbal relaxing incisions, extension of main phaco incision and toric IOLs implantation.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Ward, Imam Hossein Medical Center

Methods:

This prospective nonrandomized parallel cohort study from March 2010 to January 2011, patients underwent cataract surgery and one of these three methods was used to correct their pre-existing corneal astigmatism. In the first group, concomitant limbal relating incisions were performed. In the second group phacoemulsification was performed and the length of phaco incision was increased to correct the corneal astigmatism and in the third group Toric IOL was implanted. Patients were evaluated 1, 8 and 24 weeks postoperative. If needed extra follow up was performed.

Results:

Eighty three eyes from 72 (37 male and 46 female) patients were enrolled in the study. UCVA improvement was statistically significant in all groups through the follow up. However the difference between groups was not statistically significant except for week 24 which showed a statistically significant difference between Toric IOL and Extended On Axis Incision methods (P=0.024).

Conclusions:

Based on our findings there is no difference between these three methods, and the use of methods should be at the physician discretion FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
