Abstract Details

Purpose:

Several attempts have been made to reduce to a minimum the need to wear glasses without sacrificing visual quality. Many alternatives were proposed, among witch monovision with monofocal lenses and " mix & match" with multifocal lenses. The intraocular lens (IOL) TECNIS ® Multifocal One was developed to meet the needs of patients with cataracts and greater need for near vision than intermediate vision, without significant corneal astigmatism. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of TECNIS ® Multifocal One as an option in cataract surgery and identify the causes of incomplete patient satisfaction.

Setting:

C.H.L.C. - Centro Hospitalar de Lisboa Central, Department of Ophthalmology

Methods:

The authors conducted a prospective study on 27 eyes of 15 patients who underwent cataract surgery (phacoemulsification with IOL TECNIS ® Multifocal One implantation). We evaluated the visual acuity for near (30 cm), far (5 meters), as well as the degree of satisfaction and the possible causes of dissatisfaction of these patients.

Results:

The patients had mean uncorrected distance visual acuity of more than 20/30, on the 1st and 3rd months post-operatory, with a spherical equivalent between 0 and 0.75 diopters, and near visual acuity of J1 to J3. The degree of satisfaction concerning the independence of corrective glasses was statistically significant and the identified causes of non-total satisfaction were 1 diopter of residual astigmatism and incomplete independence from glasses in situations such as prolonged reading and viewing screens.

Conclusions:

TECNIS ® Multifocal One IOL is an excellent option in refractive cataract surgery, allowing good vision for distance and near without corrective lenses, resulting in a high degree of patient satisfaction. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
