Purpose:
The objective of this work was to describe the surgical and postoperative experience through one year following abinterno implantation with first and second generation trabecular bypass stents.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology. Hospital de Torrevieja, Alicante, Spain
Methods:
Both the first generation trabecular micro-bypass stent (Model GTS100) and the second generation stent (Model GTS400) are single-piece non-ferromagnetic titanium implants. These stents are designed for abinterno implantation through a micro-invasive incision, either inconjunction with cataract surgery or as a stand-alone procedure. The stents have been designed to create a bypass through the trabecular meshwork to Schlemms canal in order to improve aqueous outflow through the natural physiologic pathway. We implanted a single GTS100 stent or GTS400 stents in subjects with open angle glaucoma, either as a stand-alone procedure or in conjunction with cataract surgery. A consistent cohort of twelve subjects has been followed through one year postoperative.
Results:
Preoperative mean IOP was 25.9 ± 5.3 mmHg. At the preoperative exam, four subjects were on one topical ocular hypotensive medication, six subjects were on two medications and two subjects were on three medications. By one year postoperative, IOP had decreased in all subjects to 16.3 ± 1.7 mmHg, with eight subjects achieving IOP reduction of 35% or greater. Medications had been eliminated in six of twelve subjects at one year; five subjects were taking one medication and one subject was on two medications. These findings are consistent with work by the Micro-Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) Study Group, in which mean IOP reduction of 43% was reported in several studies with associated reduction in postoperative medication use through one year postoperative.
Conclusions:
In this series of cases, subjects were able to achieve decreases in both IOP and medication use 12 months after abinterno implantation with trabecular micro-bypass stents. This presentation will include a larger series with longer term postoperative follow-up and will include additional data from the MIGS Study Group studies. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
