Purpose:
To describe complications associated with femtosecond-only refractive lenticule extraction (ReLEx) under the FLEx modality.
Setting:
Cornea and Refrative Surgery Unit, Instituto de Oftalmologia Fundacion " Conde de Valenciana" , Mexico City, Mexico.
Methods:
Prospective observational study. Complications were recorded as inmediate (1st postop day) ,intermediate (up to 1 week) and mediate ( > 1 week).
Results:
75 consecutive eyes were included. Inmediate surgical complications: Lenticule was difficult to extract or failed to be created in 17.33% (13 eyes) These patients were immediately treated with femto-LASIK. In 1 eye (.99%) treatment was descentered. Intermediate complications : Corneal edema in 13.33% (10 eyes) , striae in 21.33 % (16 eyes), mild diffuse lamellar keratitis in 4 % (3 eyes), minimal interface opacites in 24%(18 eyes), Mediate complications: superficial epitheliopathy in 2.66% (2 eyes).
Conclusions:
Femtosecond-only refractive lenticule extraction is safe and effective procedure in treating low to moderate myopia and myopic astigmatism with a low rate of complications. The most common adverse events were stromal interface opacities, difficult lenticule extraction or failure to create the lenticule edges. In cases where the lenticule could not be extracted easily, the eyes were treated with normal femto-LASIK without further complications. Complications are similar to those reported in LASIK and with the exception of descentration (1 eye) were not visually significant. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
