Purpose:
To evaluate the depth of focus with monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) in patients with different corneal profiles using adaptive optics (AO) visual simulation.
Setting:
University of Valencia, Spain
Methods:
An AO visual simulator was used to simulate the aberrations pattern of three monofocal IOLs (Acrysof IQ SN60WF®; Akreos Adapt AO® and Triplato®) of different optic designs. Five groups were considered: patients without any corneal refractive surgery and with prior low and high myopic and hyperopic ablations (groups A, B, C, D, E, respectively). Defocus curves for all situations were measured, for doing that the target was moved from -5.00D to +2.50D in 0.25D steps and visual acuity (VA) was measured at all vergences.
Results:
Ten eyes of ten subjects were evaluated. The higher residual spherical aberration (SA) for all the IOLs was obtained for the group C (high myopic ablations) and the most negative residual SA was obtained for the group E (high hyperopic ablations). The best compromise between distance VA and depth of focus for the groups A, B and C were obtained with the aspheric designs meanwhile the best results for the groups D and E were obtained with the spherical IOL.
Conclusions:
The results of this study suggest that the better compromise between distance VA and depth of focus with the three IOLs and the different corneal profiles lies on a certain amount of positive SA. Over a certain limit of residual SA (positive or negative), VA decreases at all vergences worsening the depth of focus. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
