Implantation of intraocular lenses in hyperopia

Purpose:

to analyze functional and refractive results of clear lens phacoemulsification with implantation of monofocal and multifocal intraocular lenses in cases of moderate and high hyperopia.

S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution, Volgograd branch

Methods:

Clear lens phacoemulsification (CLP) was performed in 104 eyes of 64 patients with moderate and high hyperopia aged from 18 to 52 years. Preoperative uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) varied from 0,02 to 0,2; best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) ranged from 0,1 to 1,0. All patients have undergone CLP through a 2,2 mm clear corneal tunnel with intracapsular IOL injection. Calculation of IOL optical power was targeted at emmetropia. The treated eyes were allocated into two groups: the I group – 79 eyes where CLP was followed by implantation of monofocal IOL; II group – 25 eyes where a multifocal IOL was implanted. The follow-up period was from 3 months to 3 years.

Results:

mean UCVA in the I group improved from 0,05 to 0,71, in the II group – from 0,12 to 0,7. At that in 100% of cases the postoperative UCVA corresponded or over passed the preoperative BCVA. The expected emmetropia was obtained in 62% of cases in the I group and in 59% of eyes in the II group. 79,2 % of eyes had clinical refraction of Em ± 1,0 D and 91% of eyes had Em ± 2,0 D.

Conclusions:

implantation of multifocal IOLs is a method of choice in surgical correction of hyperopia in middle-aged patients as it compensates accommodative deficiency. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
