Abstract Details

Purpose:

To develop a technology of intraocular correction with single-piece flexible IOLs including reliable sutureless fixation in the capsular bag.

Setting:

S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution, Ekaterinburg Branch, Ekaterinburg, Russia

Methods:

The technology includes implantation of a single-piece flexible S-shaped IOL in the capsular bag. An incision is made in the bag equator in the sector of stretched zonules. One of the loops is inserted into the incision and is oriented along the stretched zonules. For centration the loop of the IOL may be fixed in various zones depending on the degree of lens ectopia. It provides stable correct position of the IOL in the capsular bag and does not require additional suture fixation.

Results:

We have operated 32 eyes of 22 patients aged from 6 to 37 years. Mean visual acuity before operation was 0.21. Mean visual acuity at day 2 post-op was 0.66. During surgery there was one case of vitreous prolapse through a pre-existing defect of the zonules. In remote post-op period there were 3 cases of slight IOL decentration without a decrease of visual acuity.

Conclusions:

Intracapsular IOL fixation in correct position is achieved. Suture fixation is excluded. The risk of intra- and postoperative complications is reduced. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
