Purpose:
Comparison of intraocular lens power calculation formulas accuracy for eyeballs longer than 24,5 mm.
Setting:
Ophtalmic Department of Zeromski Specialist Hospital in Cracow, Poland.
Methods:
61 patients with eyeball axial length between 24,51 mm and 26,72 mm were examined. Each patient before cataract surgery had calculated intraocular lens power according to six formulas (SRK II, SRK T, Holladay I, Hoffer Q, Binkhorst, Haigis). Holladay I implant power was selected. Visual acuity on Snellen chart was examined thirty days after cataract surgery.
Results:
54 patients (89%) after cataract surgery had correct visual acuity (1,0 on Snellen chart). In other formulas correct visual acuity would be achieved in following cases: SRK T - 39 patients, Hoffer Q - 22 patients, Binkhorst - 21 patients, Haigis - 7 patients, SRK II - 4 patients.
Conclusions:
1) Holladay I formula is recommended for intraocular lens power calculation for eyeballs with axial length bigger than 24,5 mm
2) SRK T formula seems to be satisfactory in these cases
3) SRK II and Haigis formulas are rather contraindicated for intraocular lens power calculation for eyeballs longer than 24,5 mm. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
