Purpose:
To compare the endothelial cell loss in DALK with intact Descemet membrane and microperforation
Setting:
Haydarpasa Numune Education and Research Hospital, Ophthalmology Clinic, Istanbul, Turkey
Methods:
Hundred and thirty-eight eyes of 124 patients who underwent DALK using the big-bubbletechnique were included in this retrospective study. Patients were evaluated and divided into two groups according to Descemet membrane. Hundred and twenty eyes were in group 1 with intact Descemet membrane, and 24 eyes were in group 2 who had microperforation during surgery. Endothelial cell density was analyzed using non-contact specular microscopy preoperatively, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery.
Results:
The change in ECDs was significantly higher in Group 1 compared to Group 2, from preoperative measurement to postoperative 3st month, from 3rd to 6th month and 6th to 12th month (p < 0.01 for all).
Conclusions:
Eyes with microperforation had significantly greater loss of ECD compared to eyes with intact Descemet membrane. Surgery should be done more carefully to avoid Descemet membrane perforation. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
