Purpose:
To describe and compare bimanual phacoemulsification with a single side port and traditional double side port.
Setting:
This study was designed at Bawri Nethralaya, Shillong, India in the year 2010-2011.
Methods:
Cases were divided in to two groups. Group A included 100 cases of bimanual Phacoemulsification performed with traditional method, whereas Group B included 100 cases performed with modified approach of single side port. Cases were selected randomly irrespective of grade of cataract. In group A, side ports incision were made about 2 oclock right and left of entry wound and capsulorhexis was made through right side port. In group B, single side port was made about 3 oclock left of entry wound. Different phacoemulsification techniques were used depending on grade of cataract. Bimanual aspiration and irrigation was used to aspirate cortex and OVDs. Pre and Post operative keratomerty and topography was performed.
Results:
There was no significant difference in terms of post operative results. Surgically Induced Astigmatism (SIA) was same in both the technique (p>0.05). Technically there were not many differences in terms of comfort and outcomes. But stability of anterior chamber was maintained better in second technique.
Conclusions:
Bimanual phacoemulsification can be performed with single side port without any limitation. It reduces complications like iatrogenic injury, wound leakage, risk of endophthalmitis related to side port. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
