Refractive results and safety after bilateral simultaneous cataract surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the safety and refractive results after simultaneous bilateral cataract surgery.

Setting:

Private practice, Athens Greece

Methods:

Consecutive patients scheduled for bilateral cataract surgery were enrolled and operated bilaterally with phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation in a single session. Refractive results, safety and complication rates were analyzed.

Results:

Three hundred forty nine patients were enrolled (698 eyes). Mean age of the patients was 74±9.046 years (range 44 to 95 years). In three cases a posterior capsular tear occurred (0.4%). There was no episode of endophalmitis. Cystoid macular edema occurred in 11 eyes (1.6%), but resolved in all of them during the first three postoperative months. One eye required triamcynolone injection to resolve. At three months postoperatively, none of the eyes had lost more than two lines of corrected distance visual acuity, and refraction was within ±0.50 diopter of target in 78.8% of the eyes.

Conclusions:

Simultaneous bilateral cataract surgery in our series of treated patients appears to be at least as safe and effective as unilateral cataract surgery according to the literature. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
