Purpose:
To clinically evaluate the advantages of light adustable lens (Calhoun Vision, Pasadena, California USA) implantation after using a femtosecond laser system (Catalys Precision Laser System, OptiMedica, California USA) to perform capsulotomy, lens fragmentation and cataract incisions in the treatment of patients with senile cataract.
Setting:
Ruhr University Eye Clinic, Bochum, Germany
Methods:
As part of an ongoing prospective study of femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery 12 eyes were already included. Clinical parameter like visual acuity, IOL centration and capsular shrinkage were evaluated postoperatively.
Results:
The Catalys improved the precision of sizing the capsulotomy compared with manual technique. The use of the laser also resulted in a considerable reduction of the postoperative stabilization time resulting in earlier adjustments and lock-in procedures.
Conclusions:
The improvements in precision made possible by the Catalys system were truly remarkable and represent a significant advancement in the practice of modern cataract surgery. In combination with light adjustable lens implantation the adjustments and lock-in procedures could start earlier after cataract surgery. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
