Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evalate efficacy, safety and predictability of secuential implantation of Keraring intrastromal corneal ring segments (ICRS) and Anterior Chamber Phakic IOL (aIOL) for refractive correction of Keratoconus.

Setting:

Instituto Novavision, Mexico

Methods:

This study comprised patients with keratoconus who had ICRS implantation followed 3 months later by aIOL implantation Acrysof Cachet. Anterior Chamber Deep indication for aIOL was ?3.2 mm. The uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (BCVA) distance visual acuities and residual refractive errors were analyzed, recorded preoperatively, 3 months after ICRS implantation, and 6 months after pIOL implantation.

Results:

The study enrolled 10 eyes. The mean UDVA was 20/200 or worst 100%. BCVA 20/80 -20/60 70%, 20/50 or better 30%. 6 months after aIOL resulted in UCVA 20/80 – 20/60 in 40%, 20/50 or better 60%, BCVA 20/40 or better 100%. Preop Sphere mean -12.1 D (range -6.00 to -21.50 D), Preop cyl mean -4.9 (range -2.5 to -7.5). Peop SE mean -14.54 (range -9.00 to -24.00). At 6 months post aIOL implantaton Sphere mean 0.57 (range 2.00 to -1.00), cyl mean -1.22 (range -0.75 to -2.50), SE mean -0.15 (range +0.75 to -2.25). Six months after aIOL implantation, the efficacy index was 0.88 and the safety index, 1.28.

Conclusions:

Sequential ICRS and aIOL implantation provided good visual and refractive outcomes, indicating that it is a predictable procedure for refractive correction of keratoconus. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
