Purpose:
Aim : To evaluate the correlation between hemoglobin A1c levels and the progression of diabetic retinopathy

Methods:
Materials and methods : 100 patients were included in this study with a minimum 10 year period diagnosed diabetes . 52 men and 48 women . In this study more risk factors for the development of diabetic retinopathy were considered ( age , smoking , insulin or not treatment , renal function , blood tests ) . All patients received complete ocular examination and were photographed using the TOPCON TRC50DX Fundus camera .
Results:
Results : 3 different groups of patients were studied based at the glycosylated hemoglobin A1c values ( range from 5% to 6% , 6-8 % and over 8 % ) . After a decade for the first group the incidence of the development of non proliferative diabetic retinopathy ( NPDR ) is 15 % and 2% for proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR ) . For the second group 36,6 % and 3,3 % respectively . For the third group 46,9 % and 16,6 % .
Conclusions:
Conclusion: There seems to be a strong correlation between diabetic retinopathy and glycosylated hemoglobin A1c values . HbA1c level of 8 or above seems to be a turning point on the risk of development of diabetic retinopathy . FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
