Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy, safety and stability of posterior chamber implantable collamer lens (ICL) implantation for the correction of high myopia.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Dept, Menoufyia University, Egypt

Methods:

34 eyes of 18 patients with high myopia (between-11.0 and-24 diopters) had a posterior chamber ICL (Staar ICL) implanted. During 6-36 monthsÂ’ follow-up, visual acuity, refraction, intraocular pressure (IOP), corneal reaction and space between crystalline lens and intraocular lens (ICLs) were tested.

Results:

Successful implantation was achieved in all patients. Visual acuity without correction greater than 0.5 was found in 32 eyes at 1 day and 3 months postoperatively. The mean BCVA was 0.8 or more in 27 eyes, 0.5 in 5 eyes in the first day. At 1 month the mean BCVA was 0.8 or more in 29 eyes, 0.5 in 3 eyes. During 6-36 monthsÂ’ follow-up, refraction was stable and no corneal edema or glaucoma were found. Postoperative anterior uvietis developed in one case and resolved in two weeks. Cataractogenesis under anterior capsular membrane developed in 2 eyes at 12 months postoperatively.

Conclusions:

ICL implantation was a safe, effective and predictable refractive surgical option in the management of high myopia. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
