Topical cyclosporine and transpalpebral tacrolimus: treatment for vernal keratoconjunctivitis

Purpose:

We present a series of patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis, lid or limbal type, treated with tacrolimus ointment on the eyelid or cyclosporine eye drops.

Setting:

Hospital Universitario de Fuenlabrada

Methods:

We included 12 patients aged 6 -17 years, 7 with limbal vernal keratoconjunctivitis (Trantas limbal nodules, small tarsal papillae) treated for 3 months prior to the spring season with topical cyclosporine 0.1% and 5 patients with palpebral vernal keratoconjunctivitis (tarsal giant papillae without Trantas nodules) treated with tacrolimus ointment 0.03%, during the symptomatic period and high allergen activity season. All patients had been treated the previous year with topical antihistamines and topical corticosteroids, being highly dependent on the latter and having numerous outbreaks.

Results:

Both treatments were well tolerated and free of side effects. None of the cases with palpebral form and tacrolimus treatment presented with increased activity or symptoms requiring additional corticosteroid treatment. In the limbal type and cyclosporine treatment we noticed a decrease in the use of corticosteroids, applied only sporadic days and not experiencing outbreaks as it occurred the previous year in the same patients in the same period of time.

Conclusions:

The quality of life of our patients improved as they did not experience the same disease activity like the previous year. In the same way we managed to reduce the iatrogenic consequences of the corticosteroid use. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
