Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the safety and the efficacy of a new method to increase Riboflavin passage into the stroma without the need of epithelial debridment.

Setting:

D.O.M.A. srl - Rome (Italy) Luca Gualdi

Methods:

10 eyes were submitted to Transepithelial Corneal Crosslinking with a new Riboflavin formulation and a new device composed by an electric generator (low intensity) connected to two electrodes. This system strongly increases the bioavability of riboflavin into the stroma. The " demarcation line" was studied by anterior segment OCT, tomographies and Confocal microscopy. Digital pictures and short movie will be presented.

Results:

No complication was found in therms of visual acuity, pain, polimegatism, pleiomorfism or endotelial cells/mm2 reduction. Long term results will need to confirm also topographically and tomographically decreasing of keratoconus index.

Conclusions:

Transepithelial corneal crosslinking with Ionthophoresis is a promising tecnique to perform the surgery without epitelial debridment. The main pros are less pre-operatively imbibition time required (5 minutes) and deeper Riboflavin penetration. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
