Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the visual results after laser in situ keratomileusis(LASIK) and small incision lenticule extraction(SMILE)

Setting:

A prospective, comparative study

Methods:

In this prospective study 82 eyes of 41 patients were performed : 42 eyes with LASIK and 40 eyes with SMILE. Primary outcome measures uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best spectacle corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), objective and manifest refraction, contrast sensitivity, high order aberrations, tear film break-up time(BUT), corneal erosion score and optical quality including modulation transfer function(MTF), strehl ratio, objective scatter index(OSI). (preoperatively, 1 month, 3 and 6 months postoperatively)

Results:

At 6 month follow-up predictability, efficacy and stability in SMILE group were not different comparing those in LASIK group. The mean of RMS of total high order aberrations increased 6 months postoperatively in both groups and showed no differences between groups.

Conclusions:

SMILE appears to have predictability, efficacy, stability and safety similar to those of LASIK. SMILE is a new minimally invasive refractive procedure without flap associated complications. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
