Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate reading performance before and after bilateral implantation of presbyopia? correcting aspheric apodized diffractive +3.0 D multifocal toric intraocular lenses (IOLs).

Setting:

Multiple clinical investigations sites in Spain, Germany, and Venezuela.

Methods:

In this prospective single?group, 44 adult subjects with preoperative corneal astigmatism ?0.75 to ?2.5 D were implanted with IQ ReSTOR toric IOLs and followed up to 6 months postoperatively. Binocular reading performance was assessed using the Radner reading chart preoperatively with near correction and postoperatively with no correction and with distance correction.

Results:

Preoperative mean reading speed with correction was 125±34 wpm (n=22). Postoperatively at 1, 3, and 6 months, mean reading speeds (wpm) with correction were 111±25 (n=17), 123±23 (n=21), and 133±24 (n=24), respectively. The mean preoperative LogRAD score with correction was 0.16±0.21 (n =30). Postoperatively at 1, 3, and 6 months, the mean LogRAD scores with correction were 0.18±0.11 (n=18), 0.09±0.09 (n=21), and 0.08±0.08 (n=24), respectively. Postoperatively at 1, 3, and 6 months, mean reading speeds (wpm) without correction were 132±27 (n=31), 128±35 (n=37), and 136±37 (n=35), respectively. Postoperatively at 1, 3, and 6 months, the mean LogRAD scores without correction were 0.14±0.11 (n=31), 0.16±0.16 (n=37), and 0.12±0.12 (n=35), respectively.

Conclusions:

Preoperative reading speed and reading acuity with near correction was maintained postoperatively with distance correction after implantation of IOLs. The reading performance was slightly better after surgery without correction compared with preoperatively with near correction.
